Intervention 6.2, Pilot Projects for the enhancement of natural areas

Project “Enhancement and environmental recovery of the area of the Garzaia of Codigoro”
This intervention aims at the safeguard and recovery of the old plant of the Eridania sugar refinery in Codigoro, where a group of ardeids has settled – hence the name garzaia, heron nesting reserve. The area was included in the assessment carried out through the National Project of the Ministry for the Environment called “Bioitaly” and included in the list of SAC and SCI areas in Europe, covered by the network Nature 2000. The main aim of the project was to bring tourism in the area without causing damage to the wildlife. The following interventions were carried out:
- creation of a basin for a wetland area devoted to research
- creation of an internal network of paths,
- re-planting of indigenous tree species,
- creation of protection structures for the paths (including hedges),
- installation of a floating dock for small boats,
- installation of a birdwatching tower,
- creation of a signpost system for information and educational purposes.
